At the Lake's Edge
Image taken along the still frozen shoreline of Spring Lake in northern Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. Black spruce are growing in the thick peat that blankets the shoreline. The tallest tree in the background is a white pine, growing well above the paper birch, aspen, and maple forest on the uplands.
It was a beautiful spring day with sunny skies, temperatures in the 50s (F; 10-11 C), and no wind. There was still a couple of feet of snow on the ground, so I had to wear snowshoes which got quite a bit heavier as the snow got softer and stickier. The lake ice, which was still about 25 inches (60 cm) thick, was growling and booming as it expanded in the warm sun.
