Harsh Landscape

A view of the desert landscape just off Artist's Palette Drive. It's hard to believe that any vegetation can grow here due to the extreme dryness (precipitation averages 1.58 inches [40 mm] per year) and heat (monthly average highs exceed 105 F [41 C] for June - September). However, a few perennial species (notably Desert Holly) persist and a wide variety of annuals and wildflowers magically appear in spring if winter precipitation is sufficient.
