Salt Creek Marsh

I particularly like the layers that are visible in this photo from Salt Creek in Death Valley. In the foreground is Salt Creek and the salt marsh that surrounds it, ablaze with color from the plants that have adapted to living there. The hills in the middle ground formed from uplifted silty sediments that have since been eroded away by salt creek. A more consolidated and resistant caprock is still visible in several places. Finally in the background - which seems totally disconnected from the rest of the image - are the midslopes of Tucki Mountain and the Panamints which are shrouded in clouds and deep shade. The "ribbon cloud" from a former picture is clearly visible. The background mountains and clouds give the impression one is looking into the mouth of an active volcanic crater with steam rising from the hot lava.
