Thoughts on the one hour rest during holiday time

Before the telling off was given for pulling a silly face. or if this was the second photo, it would have been after the telling off.

The hours rest during the holidays was disliked by most younger boys in the Children's Home who thought they should be allowed to go off and play with the older children once lunch and chores were over.
In summer months, blow up mattresses or ordinary mattresses were taken outside so all could have fresh air, in dull weather or the winter, you would be sent to your bedroom, it was meant to be silence, but if you talked quietly you might be able to hear the footsteps of Sister, if she was in her room there was a glass panel in the wall, she could hear even the slightest whisper. That meant either chores or a longer rest.
If it was thought that you would not be able to last an hour without the need to go for a pee, waterproof pants made sure you stayed quiet for the hour whilst the staff relaxed.
