TDA'08 - Day 18 - 29/1/08 - Desert Sunset -
18th Day - Dongola to Desert Camp - Total 1579km - Still EFI - 8 days no beer
Trip Date: Jan 29 '08
Extract from my notes on this day :-
Not much sleep last night due to the music etc, the concert ended around 11pm, an then the dogs started in earnest, with a couple of them having a running battle trough the zoo, then at 5.30am the Muezzins started the call to prayer, thats when i started my preparations for the day, not in the best of moods i have to say. As we just had an official rest day, we had been given our "permanent bags", but that just meant that I had more stuff to pack, and I was the last to leave camp.
We are on paved roads from now on, but we were told that just last year the desert road that we have been on up untilnow continued to way past Khartoum, in a couple of years the Washboard will probably will no longer be around to torment hapless cyclists, what a shame……
The ride was over for me at just after 1pm, in spite of the sleepless night, and still suffering from the after effects of my chest infection, it was a breeze after what we had been enduring over the last few days. We are camped in the desert tonight, and the atmosphere very quickly became laid back and relaxed as people got their tents sorted, and either crashed out in them or walked to a nearby irrigation cannel, some choosing to plunge into the cooling muddy water, others just to sit around chatting…. all that was missing was a cold beer!
The Numbers:-
Distance - 142km
Time start to finish - 4hrs 34mins
Average Speed - 31 kmh
Max Speed - 46.8 kmh
