Fire Insurance
Fire insurance marks from the 1700s in London. These were placed on the outsides of houses to indicate which company insured the house. The bottom one is from The Sun company, est. 1710, which is the oldest insurance company still using its original name. Insurance companies came into existence 14 year after the Great Fire of 1666. The first proper fire brigade was not started until 1866.
The Great Fire of 1666 started in the house (bakery) of Thomas Farriner, who was the baker to King Charles II. His house was in Pudding Lane, and the place where the fire went out was known as Pie Corner. Some people pointed to the fire as retribution for the sin of gluttony.
