My Mother's Hands - Fading Away
These are my mothers hands. She still has her dignity, but she is beginning to slowly fade away.
At 95 years of age she had to be taken into care a few days before Christmas and she won't be going back to "her little home" that she loves so much ever again.
She had wanted to stay in her home of 66 years because that is where all of her memories are and she wanted to be in that home to, as she said, "End my days there".
That cannot happen now and she has been deeply upset by the thought of never going back to her home which she has always loved and treasured.
When I asked if I could photograph her hands she just said "Why do you want to photograph them, they are not beautiful. Why would anyone want to see my hands?"
Her hands shake and her thumbs twitch constantly but she managed to hold still for a few seconds to let me take this image.
Her skin is like tissue paper, she is frail and bruises very easily.
She has multiple health problems and there is a "Do Not Resuscitate" order in place as she would not benefit from being brought back to life if her heart gives out again.
After 95 years of living a hard life her hands tell her story - they are very beautiful to me.
UPDATE Mum passed away quietly in her sleep in the early hours of 29 Oct 2014.
Free of pain at last.
RIP Mum 1918 - 2014
