In Memoriam: gordonplumb
Stamford, Browne's Hospital, Chapel, sII, A2, A3
Fragments, in the left light a wheel, heads of two angels etc. The right-hand light contains two "M" monogram roundels, a closed door etc. The door may possibly have been held by a figure of the Virgin, in which case it would be the "porta clausa", another symbol of the Incarnation. (Porta clausa is a reference to Ezekiel 44:2: 'Then said the Lord unto me; This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it, therefore it shall remain shut.' This is taken to be a reference to Mary's perpetual virginity).
