LSRS fitted Orion at Mildenhall.

I didn't realise at the time that this aircraft arriving at Mildenhall for a quick refuel and departure one morning would cause such a stir. The pod underneath is a Littoral Surveillance Radar System pod (LSRS), designed for use in coastal waters. This was the first time that one of these had been photographed and seen in public outside of the US, although it was known that they had been deployed to the Arabian Gulf. CIA operated P-3's with the LSRS fitted and from Dallas Love field in the US have been spotted with bogus USN markings and coding although this one looks like a regular USN airframe. Within a few weeks of this one passing through several more, fitted likewise, also passed through the 'hall. Picture was published in Aircraft Illustrated magazine and Jane's Defense Weekly.
