Divino Rostro

The image of the Divino Rostro at the Peñafrancia Shrine, Naga City, Philippines.

History: The Divino Rostro painting depicts the legendary Veronica, clad in gold, holding a white veil on which is imprinted Christ's face. In 1882, cholera struck Manila, while Casimiro Herrero was bishop of Caceres. Before the year was over, cholera had spread to Bicol. The vicar Pedro de la Torre, a native of Osa de la Vega in Spain, suggested to Herrero to enshrine an image of the Divino Rostro in his posession in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Naga for the duration of the epidemic. The bishop agreed to the vicar's suggestion and ordered also that prayers to Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia be made. On August 26, 1882, both images were enshrined in the cathedral. Since then, the two images (Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia and the Divino Rostro) were inseparable and were carried aloft in the Peñafrancia procession.

The Divino Rostro in the posession of the vicar is a copy of the painting enshrined in the parish church of Osa de la Vega in Spain. The inhabitants of Osa de la Vega turned to the Divino Rostro for protection specially in 1834, 1853 and 1855 when the cholera epidemic struck Spain.
