Witch Jars
Once again things are beginning to glow with eerie light at the Luther house, this must mean Halloween is fast approaching. (This project was inspired by Pumpkinrot. He calls these Witch Jars. Sometimes people call them Swamp Jars.) How to make a gunky jar: use clean clear glass jars with lids (we bought ours at Dollar Tree) Pour some water based stain into the jar, you can use any color you like. Swirl the stain, make the stain run up and down the glass, move it around, pour out extra stain into the next jar, keep the stain moving and recoating among your various jars. Using waterbased stain means it dries faster so you only have to swish this stuff around for about an hour. As it begins to dry squirt the stained sides with watery black paint or red if you want some gore. This just adds a new color of yuck to the mix. Swish it around and tip the jar so the new color moves and runs. Now add a bit of fine grained sand, just a little here and there, I also added some grunge spice (with copper glitter) for added texture. If you don't object to dirt you can use that too, I didn't. Add more stain or watery paint if you think you need it. Make sure everything is sticking to the sides of the jar and not just running to the bottom. If it's still too drippy you need to keep the gunk moving back up and down the sides so the jar will look gunky when lit. Once things are getting sticky and staying where you like it, let the jars dry over night. Day 2- paint the lids a gunky color, we used black, hot glue on some creepy cloth. Before adding the lids I added a bit of wire to make these hangable (is that a word?) We also used just the outer ring of a canning lid so we don't have to unscrew the lids to drop in the lights. We're using battery operated tealights. Turn on the light, drop it in the jar and ta-da! Very Cool Witch Lights.
