ITS Loveless Substation
The coal train had bedded down on the mine loop track and was not really anywhere that good shots could be had.
But, just down the way from the Mine, there was a little old gem (for those that have the Traction bug that is...) in the form of this Substation from the Illinois Traction System. In the hey-day, buildings like these were all over the system, roughly every 8 miles or so. From the extensive knowledge that was passed down to me from my Father, I know that this location was called Loveless.
The framework of the building itself is still in great shape, even if all the components for generating electric are long gone. What I believe to have been duct work for cooling fans (I imagine it get quite hot inside when things were humming along...) on top of the build are now starting to rust and topple. Not bad considering that stuff was probably last used at least 50 years ago.
When people say that "they don't make 'em like they used to..." things like this building spring to mind. Of course, more recently than when these photos were shot it has become clear that statement applies to people as much as things.
I took the chance to take several details shots inside and out and will be posting them over the next few days.
