227/365 Blind taste
[version française ici : shadow.light.over-blog.com/article-blind-taste-72116513.html]
Imagine that you had no sense of smell
Well, not exactly
Imagine, instead, that you had a limited sense of smell
Then
well
smell being such a massive part of what we call taste
you would have a very limited sense of taste
as well
Now
for the sake of weirdness
let's limit this sense of taste
not just in strength
or precision
but more than this
let's limit it
also
and especially
...
in time
Imagine
that
when you eat something
you could indeed taste it
although not as strongly or precisely as some other people would
but
that
as soon as this food has gone away from your tastebuds
you could not recall the taste of it
more than a few seconds
Instant taste
instantly gone
Imagine
just after eating something
being left
with the memory of whether you liked it
or not
and that's it
nothing more
nothing else
Any other detail
would have vanished by then
Strange things would happen
if you had such a nonsense of taste
You would probably be rather
easy
to feed
as you would appreciate many simple things
… never getting bored of any food
You would look at your plate
what's left in it
and you would know
that you would enjoy the next bite
although you couldn't know exactly what it would feel like ...
Of course you would eat it !
And the next bite two
Until it is all gone
Quickly
You could also eat various things
- anything that you remember you like in fact -
in
any
order
Without
any
interference
between each other
A good thing
for some
is that it would make the very notion of diet perfectly absurd
as you would not really be missing any specific food
since you would not crave its effects on you
You would just remember that you like it
sure
but not differently than any other reasonably sane food that you also happen to remember you like
You wouldn't even have to trick yourself
Well
of course
cooking
would be a quite a strange exercice
Sure, you could follow a recipe
well ... you would have to follow a recipe !
because
you could not predict anything
about the taste
of anything
That's where the
limitation in then precision
and even more so in the strength
of that sense of taste of yours
would save you
... but it would save noone else
among the people
who would be
unlucky enough
to be around
at the time
You would
quickly
limit yourself
to very simple things
anything that couldn't fail
... sometimes at the insistence
of some friends of yours
who would like to remain so
Some bad
Some good
And the best part of it all
oh the best of the best
and by far
oh let me tell you about that
is when you are given the chance to eat
a
really
good meal
And I mean
really
really
good
I mean
when
all the sensations
all the instantaneous sensations
you have
one after the other
while eating
bite after bite
are captivating you
again and again
like a wonderful story
when it is wonderfully told
and you know that something else wonderful will follow
and you just want it to keep going on
There is this pleasure
just the sheer pleasure
of letting yourself be carried along
Nothing intellectual in there
let me tell you
and thanks to this special taste of yours
nothing can come in the way
of the instantaneity of it all
It's
It's akin to ...
to ...
well ...
you know what I mean
If you've
ever
experienced it
Enough
