St Peter's, Park Lane, Norwich

The Park Lane Methodist Church was built in 1939. This very large site which includes a Church Hall and Boys Brigade building was acquired by The Interesting Building Company who planned to develop 20 properties on the site. This was turned down as the developers refused to meet the affordable housing commitment. Residents in nearby streets were also concerned about the poor planning, parking and the high risk of flooding.

The company has submitted 2 further planning applications.

The first one demolishes all the building on the site for the buiilding of 10 housing units and the second retains the church but demolishes the other buildings to provide 10 units. There will be a public hearing on 8/8/18 at City Hall to discuss these proposals.

The church by Cecil Yelf is unfortunate in terms of scale for the site and the surrounding church buildings are of no architectural merit. The church is based on the Methodist Church in Hendon which is an impressive art deco building flanked by large blocks of flats and set back on a much wider road. The Park Lane church dwarfs the surrounding terrace houses and the plans for retaining it cut out light from the surrounding houses. There will be no gardens or play areas and houses will be overlooked from roof terraces and windows of 4 storey flats.
