Liverpool Heroes memorial (1)

The ‘Liverpool Heroes’ memorial in Abercromby Square commemorates the sixteen men from the city of Liverpool awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for valour in military conflict. The statue commemorates the actions of Captain Noel Chavasse VC & Bar MC, and a Liverpool Scottish stretcher bearer attending a wounded soldier. During the First World War Captain Chavasse was twice awarded the Victoria Cross, the second posthumously after he continued to rescue and treat men during the conflict at Wieltje, Belgium, though he was mortally wounded himself. All sixteen local recipients of the Victoria Cross are named on the base of the memorial.

The bronze statue is the work of local sculptor, Tom Murphy.
