Frantic
Nathan Barnes
The artworks selected for this exhibition are part of a larger, ongoing series titled Strangely Familial. The title of the series is both descriptive of its subjects – otherwise-organized portraits of my ancestors, family, and friends – and a gentle reference to the uncanny. Some of the departures, manipulations, and countered expectations observed in these portraits reflect my interest in that species of aesthetic experience that unsettles. But a determination to capture the complexity of my subjects exerts the greatest influence over compositional decisions. Biographical plot twists and narrative U turns are evoked where the interactions of real objects, textures, layers, and illusions on flat surfaces yield the unpredictable.
