As you can see, these apples are not perfect. They can't sell them, so they used them for making syrup ! But .... this fruit is sooo good !

 

Old Steamsyrupfactory of Borgloon, Cultural heritage

The old Steamsyrupfactory of Wijnants-Groenendaels in Borgloon is one of the last remainders of the industrial processing from fruit to syrup. Borgloon was at the end of 19th and the beginning of the 20th century the cradle of the syrup production.

Fruit of Haspengouw was processed to syrup, firstly still old-fashioned, later in an industrial manner. The factory from 1878 - 23 workers in 1959 - have equipped still entirely, stands on an old station complex and lies on walk distance from the center. Since 1988 no more syrup was flowing

The old factory, fallen into disrepair and rare witness of the syrup industry which ensured prosperity, touched in decline, was finalist in a monument s struggle in 2007 and became the winner of this television price and got the modernization premium of 500,000 euro.

A first realization: in April 2009 the “Loonse” square at the factory was inaugurated. At that moment also confessed that the restoration file for the site has been ended and the sum of 314, 344, - euro should be available soon. And small-scale, they make syrup again (2x apple, 1x pear and sugar beet) and … it is delicious !
