Qaisar Mahmood Qawwal at the Humber street Gallery Hull + a link to a video below
I first heard Qawwali music on the Andy Kershaw radio show in the mid-eighties. The music he played was by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, one of the masters of this form. The New York Times named Khan the greatest Qawwali of his generation. He was credited with introducing Qawwali music to international audiences. Qawwali, a form of Sufi devotional music that is highly rhythmic and emotional, is aimed at allowing the musicians and the audience to move into a trance-like state.
I never thought I would see it live, but in September I went to Bradford to hear a concert that was part of the Bradford City of Culture. The artists were the Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali Group, and the singers were the nephews of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The gig was amazing; the concert hall was packed with a very enthusiastic, mainly South Asian crowd. Sadly, I was too far back to take any photographs.
I was amazed to find I could go to another Qawwali event this time in Hull just before Christmas. This time I was much closer to the stage, and I was able to get a shot of the Qaisar Mahmood Qawwal group close up.
Sorry for the long write-up; however, if you are at all interested in what Qawwali sounds like, here is a 90-sec film from the performance also shot on my iPhone.
