One panel of the Isenheim Altarpiece by Grünewald 1512

This image of this early sixteenth-century painting will not be to everyone’s taste, but I recommend at least having a glance at it; it really is exceptional and unique. It does need to be seen LARGE.

Just occasionally, when you visit a gallery, you come across a work that just astonishes one . Seeing the various panels of the Isenheim Altarpiece at the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar was one of those occasions. Grünewald ( 1470-1528), who was painting in the early sixteenth century, seems to have arrived at modernism and surrealism about 400 years before anyone else . The only painter of this period he can be compared to is Hieronymus Bosch .

This panel is the most fantastic; it depicts Saint Anthony tormented by Demons. In the museum, you can see all the panels of the altarpiece; however, when it was in place at the Monastery of St. Anthony, it was more like a book, and people would only see the various panels on special days . Enough to say that Mary and I were so impressed that we returned to the museum later in the holiday to see the altarpiece again.

A little background

The Isenheim Altarpiece is an altarpiece sculpted and painted by Matthias Grünewald in 1512–1516. It is Grünewald's largest work and is regarded as his masterpiece.

It was painted for the Monastery of St. Anthony in Issenheim near Colmar, which specialised in hospital work. The Antonine monks of the monastery were noted for their care of plague sufferers as well as for their treatment of skin diseases, such as ergotism. The image of the crucified Christ is pitted with plague-type sores, showing patients that Jesus understood and shared their afflictions. The veracity of the work's depictions of medical conditions was unusual in the history of European art.
