Part of the main living room in the Mackintosh House
It would have been a cultural crime to go to Glasgow and not post an image related to the creative genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
If Chicago has Frank Lloyd Wright, and Barcelona has Gaudi then Glasgow has Mackintosh. All three were modernists bridging the gap between art , architecture and design
One of the must sees in Glasgow is the Mackintosh House in the Hunterian museum part of Glasgow university campus . Another is the amazing Willow Tea Rooms on Sauchiehall Street.the interior completely the work of Mackintosh.
Sadly the most famous and important of his buildings is no longer available to us. When Glasgows College of Art was hit by serious fires in 2014 and again in 2018 it led to the total destruction of the eponymous Mackintosh Building one of the city's iconic landmarks, of international fame. Designed between 1896 and 1909 it showed Mackintosh as a pioneer of the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style)
The main image is part of the living room in the Mackintosh House It is Mackintosh's only surviving domestic interior in his native Glasgow. The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. You enter the living room from a dark staircase and your eye is just filled with light . Everything in the room the furniture, the ceramic the light fittings were designed by the couple . They were ahead of their time in the sense that they were both equal partners in the relationship he always insisted that "Margaret has genius. I only have talent"
