Mont Saint-Michel # 1
** It was a four hour round trip from Blonville Sur Mer to Mont Saint-Michel but it was certainly worth it . Sometimes these famous sites can not live up to the hype but this one surely did . We had hoped to see it at high tide but the timing was not right for us so there was just a small amount of water around the island. It was a perfect day about 30 C and as clear as a bell
Mont Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 for its unique aesthetic and importance as a medieval Christian site.
Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island with notoriously dangerous tides on average the tidal range is 46 feet .The Island consists of leucogranite which solidified from an underground intrusion of molten magma about 525 million years ago, during the Cambrian period, as one of the younger parts of the Mancellian granitic batholith
The lower part of the island is mainly shops and restaurants but it worth climbing the many steps to the summit to see the Abbey. It was constructed in the 11th century, William of Volpiano an Italian was chosen by Richard II, Duke of Normandy, to be the building contractor. He designed the Romanesque church of the abbey, daringly placing the transept crossing at the top of the mount. Many underground crypts and chapels had to be built to compensate for this weight; these formed the basis for the supportive upward structure that can be seen today. Today Mont Saint-Michel is seen as a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture.
