La Place des Héros Arras
There are two large squares in Arras, La Place des Héros is the smaller one. The larger square is called Le Grande Place and is only a small street away. It's unusual to have two large squares in one city. It was lucky I took this shot that afternoon I went back the following morning and the square was full of market stalls and vans
Arras' two ancient market squares, the Grand' Place and the smaller place des Héros (also known as the Petite Place), are surrounded by 17th- and 18th-century Flemish Baroque houses topped by curvaceous gables. Although the structures vary in decorative detail, their 345 sandstone columns form a common arcade unique in France. The original buildings were made of wood however like 80% of Arras, both squares were heavily damaged during WWI, so many of the façades were reconstructed in brick after the war.
