Sainte-Chapelle Paris

* I never visited Sainte-Chapelle on my previous trips to Paris , it was completely off my radar. I am glad I finally rectified this omission as its an extraordinary building . Having visited Chartres , Reims and Bourges I thought I had seen the best stained glass in France but Sainte-Chapelle took it to another level. It was like walking into a vast kaleidoscope the windows appeared to float given the minimal stone supports . It was obviously built to the glory of God and to please a king however I marvel at the ingenuity and imagination of the thirteenth century craftsman and builders who created this glorious example of human civilisation .

I really had to push the ISO on this shot it was quite dark inside hand held shot

A little information

The Sainte-Chapelle is a royal chapel in the Gothic style, within the medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century, on the Île de la Cité in the River Seine in Paris. Construction began some time after 1238 and the chapel was consecrated on 26 April 1248. The Sainte-Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of of Gothic architecture. it has one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world.

The windows dominate the chapel and the stone wall surface is reduced too little more than a delicate framework. Arranged across 15 windows, each 15 metres high, the stained glass panes depict 113 scenes from the Old and New Testaments recounting the history of the world until the arrival of the relics in Paris. The huge windows fill the nave and apse, while a large rose window with Flamboyant tracery (added to the upper chapel c. 1490) dominates the western wall.
