Well Dressing Buxton Derbyshire 2018
I spent the last two days in Derbyshire and got the opportunity to see the Well Dressing in Buxton. I imagine some english people as well as people from other countries will be unfamiliar with this practice . Between May and September all the villages and small towns in Derbyshire will display a well dressing usually on a fixed timetable . The Buxton dressing celebrates the centenary of women suffrage .
A bit of info
Well dressing, also known as well flowering, is a tradition practised in some parts of rural England in which wells, springs and other water sources are decorated with designs created from flower petals. The custom is most closely associated with the Peak District of Derbyshire and Staffordshire].The custom of well dressing in its present form probably began in the late 18th century, and evolved from "the more widespread, but less picturesque" decoration of wells with ribbons and simple floral garlands.
Wooden frames are constructed and covered with clay, mixed with water and salt. A design is sketched on paper, often of a religious theme, and this is traced onto the clay. The picture is then filled in with natural materials, predominantly flower petals and mosses, but also beans, seeds and small cones. Each group uses its own technique, and can chose the subject for the year
While I was in Derbyshire it all started to get very interesting . On a positive note at least we lost to most ineffectual Foreign Secretary Britain has had since the nineteen thirties . Whose crass stupidity would regularly cause embarrassment to the country in normal times he would have been sacked. The only important thing to Boris was feeding his own vanity and ego . He completely lacked principals and any sense of morality unlike Mr David Davis, and he would lie as easily as he would breathe . Clowns belong in the circus not holding high offices of state
THANKS FOR YOUR VISITING BUT CAN I ASK YOU NOT TO FAVE AN IMAGE WITHOUT ALSO MAKING A COMMENT. MANY THANKS KEITH
