Guardbridge Papermill. Working with bales of esparto grass. Rags & rope were the main ingredients for papermaking but later esparto was brought in from Africa and made a very high quality paper. There were stories about snakes coming out of these bales.
Also top middle of the picture see the man in the crane that seems like a good job :) I am told by John Jack of Denny that these cranes were also at Carrongrove, they moved along a rail and hoisted bales up from railway wagons.
Thanks to Ben for these great pictures.

Foudrinier paper making machine with drum reel for winding up the paper roll. Note the empty spindle on top, this made changing the roll of paper much easier, when the roll got to the correct size it was moved out and hoisted away, the empty spindle was wound down and the process was continuous. Earlier machines did not have a drum reel you will see they had two spindles mounted, this meant paper reels were smaller and it took a bit more skill to break the paper and wind onto a new spindle.

Fourdrinier paper making machine working middle right to left, reel up , calendar stacks to smooth the paper , further back you can see drying felts these continuous heavy felts rotated almost like a track on a bulldozer and pressed the sheet against drying cylinders filled with steam to dry the paper. Above you can see a 7 tonne hoist , this was used to lift the very heavy machine parts into place.

Early 1900's Fourdrinier paper making machine looking from the ' wet ' end the pulp mixture 98 percent water flows onto the wire the water is quickly drawn away leaving a web of paper which is pressed and dried as it travels along the machine to the ' dry ' end reel up. Note there is no overhead crane in this machine house John Jack tells former engineer of Carrongrove Denny tells me that when they were lifting heavy parts of the machine they had to put in beams to take the weight or the roof would have come down!
