Reactions to Methylisothiazolinone
by datgrrl137
These are real people from around the world who have become sensitized (were not previously allergic but became so after exposure) to methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone, benzisothiazolinone and octylisothiazolinone.
The chemical, which is purported to be a "safe" preservative, is not. In fact, it has been identified as the 2013 Contact Dermatitis Allergen of the Year, and is banned in Europe in leave-on products as of July 2015. However, it is not banned or regulated tightly in the US and other countries, and is still being allowed in leave-on and industrial products in EU countries. The European Commission has said that they cannot find a safe level of MIT, but the proliferation of usage continues unabated.
Please help raise awareness and encourage manufacturers to stop using this "time bomb" in their products. The early safety studies did not take into account the massive cross exposure that occurs, primarily with children and women, when they are going through normal daily routines.
