Hooper Island Lighthouse, Chesapeake Bay, Maryland.
This light marks a shoal off the three Hooper Islands, Upper, Middle and Lower, along the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. It sits in 18 feet of water, 3 miles west of Middle Hooper Island. Built in 1902, a caisson type, with a 4 story tower for the keepers, and provided with a 4th order Fresnel lens. Automated in 1961. On a routine Coast Guard maintenance check in 1976, much to their embarrassment, it was discovered that the lens had been stolen. The light is now maintained by the U.S. Lighthouse Society.
