Pointe St. Gildas Semaphore Station And Lighthouse, St. Nazaire, Brittany, France

The semaphore, is a primitive means of communicating with off shore ships now bypassed by more modern methods. The station dates to 1816. The light on top was added by the occupying Germans in 1941 to facilitate their naval activities, and this station became both a semaphore station and lighthouse, the only one of it's kind.

The building is 56 feet high, with 3 stories. White, red and green quick flashing lights are displayed, depending on direction.

Today the building is a shipwreck museum which also offers details about how the semaphore worked.

Located at Pointe St. Gildas on the south side of the Loire River estuary.
