Catherine The Great purchased the best of western European art between 1764 and 1774, over 2500 paintings, 10,000 carved gems, 10,000 drawings and vast amounts of silver and porcelain. None of her successors matched the quantity of her remarkable purchases. After the revolution the nationalization of royal and private property brought more paintings and works of art to the museum making it one of the largest.
