Flatholm Island Lighthouse, Cardiff, Wales, U.K.

Close-up view of the lantern room with a view of the first order Fresnel lens and the red directional panels.

The original lighthouse was built in 1737 by a private party. Trinity House (responsible for all U.K. lighthouses) acquired the lighthouse in 1819 and rebuilt the tower in 1820 by wrapping a new tower around the old one. The lighthouse was altered in 1867 to support the additional weight of the new first order Fresnel lens. As seen in the photo the lighthouse was undergoing maintenance and repair at the time of my visit.

The 99 foot tall round tower is built of stone. The light signal is 3 flashes, either red or white, depending on direction, every 10 seconds.

Located on a small island just off of Cardiff harbor in the middle of the Severn River estuary as it enters the Bristol Channel.
