Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, Oregon

I did not take this photo, but it's so spectacular i wanted to share with all flikr and lighthouse buffs and everyone else. Taken by Jim Thode during the recent violent storms pounding the Oregon coast. He had to brave mud slides, flooding and sleet to get to the coast.

The top of the lighthouse is 140 feet above sea level, so the exploding wave must be about 200 feet high.

The lighthouse was built in 1881 and inactivated in 1957 and sold into private hands in 1980. The private owners gutted the inside of the lighthouse and were prepared to make it into a columbarium, (repository for the ashes of the dead), but this plan has fallen through.

The lighthouse is located on a tiny island about one mile off of Tillamook Head and about 6 miles southwest of Seaside, Oregon and is very difficult to photograph from the shore. The 62 foot tall square tower sits atop a one story keeper's house..
