It makes them out to be heroes or something. But they are working for a public company, their product is a service, and therefore their performance (Actually the construction guys do do a heck of a job but I'm talking about the train operations/customer service people) should be based on the quality of that service, but there's no competition, so there's no way to guage that service, other than the fact that I hate have the airconditioning turned off at 10 or 11 PM when it's still hot, being crammed into train at inhuman capacity levels, being jerked and jostled around by sadistic drivers on said packed trains, walking onto trains that smell like poop or some other unpleasant smell, etc. etc.
But what other train line are you going to take from your home? There' no competition
Also, more on the train industry here - dept. store chain conglomerate subsidizes the existence of the train line (train lines rarely make money), same deal for JR, only worse because it was the government (privatized in reality?), compare JR and private lines, ta;l about subways and train lines (Tokyo metro, Oedo lines, links to private train lines) tickt machines, suica and passnet (new combo one coming out this year?), train nerds (photography, train fetishism) etc. etc.
