Male Satin Bowerbird displaying
Not the best photo, he was amongst the undergrowth and light was poor, also lots of sticks in the way. But very happy with shot as it is first time in the wild I have found a bower and watched a male displaying. We enjoyed the show, he puffed himself up, danced with his decoartions while making amazing buzzing sounds and he also mimicked a Kookaburra.
For those who don't know of this species, the male Satin Bowerbird builds a bower to attract females, this is his stage where he dances to impress. The bower consists of two walls of sticks, it is built on the ground and is decorated with blue objects. This male had straws, parrot feathers, different bottle lids & bits of plastic.
The wife & I sat watching for about 45 minutes, during this time the male continously left and returned 6-7 minutes later. He moved his blue bits around, put some new sticks in the bower. It appeared that he went off and found females to bring them back to the bower, when he returned and a female followed a few seconds later this was when he was most excited and displayed frantically.
An immature male also visited the bower (while the boss was away) and practised displaying. The younder male moved a decoration and was caught in the act, the mature male was most upset!
