Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain 5-Day Course (DRSB): Day Five, All Day: Self-Portraits...Likeness Forming

Progressing.

An interesting aspect for me was my awareness of my alternating state of mind throughout the drawing. I would flip between a feeling of deep pleasure at points, and then a huge sense of trepidation - was it accurate, was it 'good' enough, would I ruin it and have to start again? Having drawn one side of my spectacles, I was fearful of drawing the opposite side of them.

Betty Edwards says that it is our Left Brain expressing its distress at losing control of the operation. I guess it's no different to the way our minds hold us back from trying new things, or believing in ourselves generally. Whatever it is, it is powerfully felt.

However, the rewards for persisting with the process (of drawing, in this case) are palpable at the time, and the bonus with drawing is that they can be re-experienced when looking at the physical results of our labours. As suggested in the 'Litany Against Fear' from the novel, 'Dune'...

"...And when it [Fear] has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain."...

...or, in this case, our drawings will remain (as proof against Fear).
