Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain 5-Day Course (DRSB): Day One - Vase/Faces Mirror Exercise
This is the first drawing exercise we did (after drawing our "Before Course" self portrait). Mine shown here is oriented for a left-hander, ie, me in this instance....right handers are also catered for.. ;-)
This was an introduction to feeling the odd, wobbly shift in the brain when having to refer one's drawn lines with those 'remote' from them on the page and mirrored..weird...
I had done this exercise several times in the 29 years(!) since I first bought Betty Edwards' "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" book, but I could never persuade myself to progress through the more demanding exercises on my own - hence my attending this course.
A reasonable outcome, but my 'face' is too close to the reference face, making the 'vase' distorted. This is particularly evident if one views the image upside-down.
Since I compiled and posted this album, this image is the most viewed amongst them. So it seems a natural focal point for me to include a link to the website that provides details of the course that I attended, and during which I drew the pictures that are posted here. I would scatter the link amongst all the other pictures, but the Flickr Team only allow me one instance. I don't recieve any reward - financial or 'in kind' - for doing so; there is no link to an online ordering mechanism; I merely wish to give uncertain, would-be artists exposure to the availability of the course, and to express my gratitude to the teacher for providing it.
Everything about the course made attending it entirely worthwhile: the methods, the teacher, the studio (right next to the accommodation), the accommodation, the surrounding countryside, my fellow coursemates, and the solid results that proved (to ourselves) that we can draw.
