Natural Cistern

Rain drops collected in the plump leaves of this Sedum 'Autumn Joy'

'Herbstfreude' ('Autumn Joy')

I purchased a single plant in 1989 to add interest to my then 'new' yard. I found it has provided much beauty and pleasing interest all year long, either en masse or as a specimen. Additionally, this variety is hardy, reliable and an outstanding garden and landscaping plant. It divides easily, tolerates almost every condition, seems to be pest resistant and has an outstanding show of flower come late summer into autumn.

I reside in Zone 6.

Many sedums are cultivated as garden plants, due to their interesting and attractive appearance and hardiness. The various species differ in their requirements; some are cold-hardy but do not tolerate heat, some require heat but do not tolerate cold.

Numerous hybrid cultivars have been developed, of which the following have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit:-

'Herbstfreude' ('Autumn Joy')

'Bertram Anderson'

'Matrona'
