Died – March 26, 1892, Camden, NJ
Whitman has been called the father of free verse. He was also a volunteer nurse in several army hospitals in Washington, D.C., and was also a clerk in the Army Paymaster's office. He first published Leaves of Grass – his most famous work – with his own money.
