Walt Whitman

Born—May 31, 1819, West Hills, Town of Huntington, Long Island, New York

 

Died—March 26, 1892, Camden, NJ

 

Called the father of free verse. He was also a volunteer nurse in several army hospitals in Washington, D.C., and was also a clerk in the Army Paymaster's office. He first published Leaves of Grass—his most famous work—with his own money.
