Louis XIV by Hyacinthe Rigaud. 1701 Originally done as a gift to King Philip V of Spain but was so loved by the king and is court held on to it and several other versions were pained. Rigaud was a french baroque painter of Catalan origin whose career was based in Paris. Rigaud painted many important figures in the world of art, poets as well as religious personages of the times including the cardinal de Fleury and Bossuet; many influential archbishops and bishops paid large sums of money for a portrait.
