communal life

Click to view large on black. So much personality here and enough excitement to wake up most of the pups and sleepers. I like the mother on the right looking at us through the bushes.

In the early days of the Año Nuevo Station (1870's) the few remaining northern elephant seals continued to be hunted on the island off the point. Within a decade they had disappeared and were presumed globally extinct. It wasn't till 1892 that a small colony was discovered off the coast of Baja California. Only after a 70 year hiatus did they begin to recolonize Año Nuevo.

Anyway. This is what they would have looked like 200 years ago before color was invented by James Clerk Maxwell and Thomas Sutton.
