Sinaia

This panorama is from the site of a future hotel in Sinaia, Romania (the town is named after a 16th century monastery, which in turn was named after the biblical Mount Sinai).

In the Bucegi Mountains along the skyline is memorial cross visible for tens of miles in the Prahova River Valley. It's a memorial to Romanians who died fighting the southward advance of the Central Powers from Transylvania to Bucharest. After the Prahova River Valley fell in November 1916, Bucharest and the oil field of Ploieşti fell to the Germans in December. The region around Ploiesti was also one of the main sources of petroleum for the Nazis in WWII.
