Construction was started by King Carol I a few years before he helped Romania achieve full independence. One of Romania's most important historical autocrats.
It was closed when I visited (always a reason to return) but is supposed to be amazingly ornate, contain 2000 collected paintings, 4000 historic weapons from the 14th to 18th centuries, historic musical instruments, suits of armor for horse and man, etc.
