algal lines

Lake Padden near Bellingham.

A thin layer of ice (frequently tested by young natives with limbs, rocks, and tennis balls) has an underlying community of floating green algae. They some how manage not to get incorporated into the ice and move around in response to waves (3/4 of the lake is ice free) and bubbles (rodent exhalations and methane seeps?).
