The Junpero Serra Freeway crossing the high ground between highway 92 and 84. This section, officially referred to as the "world's most beautiful freeway", was not finished until the 1970's. Instead, the lowland route, Cañada road (lower right) was used to connect sections finished earlier. Cañada road is closed to traffic on bicycle Sundays throughout the summer.
Both roads lie entirely within property owned by theThe San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and both development and access is restricted. Serpentine soils along this section support several endangered plant species and colorful spring wildflower displays (especially at Edgewood Open Space Preserve).
