Santa Maria dell'Assunta (seen here on the left) was Venice's first cathedral, dating originally to the seventh century when the island of Torcello was the first area of the Venice lagoon to be settled.
The current building dates from 1008 and is in the Veneto-Byzantine style. The interior of the cathedral is famous for its twelfth century mosaic of the Madonna and child in the apse.
Seen here on the right is the church of Santa Fosca, which was built in the eleventh and twelfth centuries to house the body of the martyred St Fosca.
