mosaic of Madonna and Child on St Mark's, Venice

This 13th century mosaic is on the south facade of St Mark's Basilica, facing the Doge's Palace and the Piazzetta San Marco. It appears in a small lunette between the two main arches.

It is lit by two lanterns which are kept permanently lit, in observance of the vow of a mariner who was led to safety across the stormy waters of the lagoon by a light burning on the Piazzetta.

This photo was taken from an external walkway running immediately beneath the mosaic.
