piazzetta di San Marco and San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice

At the far edge of the piazzetta stand two columns, on which are symbols of Venice: on the left column, the winged lion of St Mark, and on the right, a statue of St Theodore who was the patron saint before St Mark. St Theodore carries a spear and a crocodile, symbolising the dragon which he is said to have slain. The columns are thought to have been erected in about 1268.

On the far left of the picture, partly lit by the setting sun, is the Doge's Palace. This is the oldest section of the palace, built in the gothic style in 1340.

Beyond the piazzetta, standing on an island in the Venice lagoon, is the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by the architect Palladio and begun in 1566.
