one of the 'Pillars of Acre' outside St Mark's, Venice
This is one of a pair of free-standing square-sided stone columns which stand on the south side of St Mark's Basilica, Venice, in the Piazzetta San Marco adjacent to the Doge's Palace.
They were thought to have come from Acre (Akka in modern day Israel) but are now believed to have been looted from the church of St Polyeuktos in Constantinople in 1204 during the Fourth Crusade.
