Pitigliano - curious relief carving on church

This 12th century relief carving is on the left exterior wall of the Chiesa di Santa Maria (also known as the Chiesa di San Rocco) in Pitigliano, a small town in the Grosseto region of Tuscany, Italy.

It depicts a man with both arms outstretched, with each hand in a dragon's mouth. It is said to symbolise the superiority of spiritual strength over brute force.
