romanesque capital in Elne Cathedral cloister

Elne Cathedral - Cathédrale Sainte-Eulalie-et-Sainte-Julie to give it its full name - is in the Languedoc-Roussillon region near Perpignan in south-west France. It was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Its cloister was built in stages between the 12th and 14th centuries. It is an example of Catalan romanesque architecture.

This picture shows the carved decoration on the capital of one of the large rectangular marble columns, depicting scenes from the story of the nativity. On the left is the annunciation where the Virgin Mary is told by the angel Gabriel that she will give birth to Jesus; on the right is the visitation where the Virgin Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth when they are both pregnant.

The carved decoration on the column capitals is similar to that of the cloisters of St Michel de Cuxa and the Prieuré de Serrabone which are nearby in this same region.
